Research that Benefits Children and Families—Uplifting Stories

I do not know anyone who has personally participated in a research study but I do know people who I believe have personally benefited from the research process. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She is currently in remission but I believe if it had not been for scientific research and the people who participated in the medical studies prior to my mother’s diagnoses she may not be here with us now. I believe the research process is critical to the preservation of life and for the betterment of our society but only when it is done is a safe and ethical manner.

I also located an interesting article that relates to my simulation topic of social/emotional development and its influence on a child’s future. In this study 1000 children were followed for 30 years in order to see how their ability or development of self-control as a child affected their health, wealth, and criminal offending. This study suggests that parents should focus on strategies that will encourage their children to develop self control as early as toddlerhood. Children will benefit from the development of self control and may be less likely to suffer from ill health, substance abuse, poor finances or perform criminal acts in the future. The study can be found at: http://www.pnas.org/content/108/7/2693.full.pdf+html

  2. Thank you for sharing your post, it is an inspiration to know your mother is in remission. I also agree, research studies can be a valuable resource when determining which medical treatments will work best. The research article seems to be one that will provide useful information for your simulation topic--wishing you all things good, great and wonderful in its completion!

  3. Hey there Andrea,
Yes it is a great research topic. I remember when we were studying developmental stages there was a part of the brain where self-control was stimulated in play. Have you heard of this concept? That self-regulation is connected to and even a result of productive and healthy play?

  4. I love the topic of your article as I agree that this is something we must begin to research. Too many students are leaving school only to enter the correctional system. If we want to make a difference in this area this is something that we must begin to research in the early years to determine what can be done to reduce the number of students that take this path. Social emotional education is something that we must begin to formally teach in our schools.

  6. Hi Ledet,
Great blog post. I enjoyed knowing your mom is in remission. My mom had breast cancer when I was 10 years of age and that has been exactly forty-four years as today; God is great and thank the him for good research. I also have a close friend to the family as a sister who has been diagnosed with cancer and now they cannot find a trace of it and another cousin with the signs. Research has it's place and good to know some people are willing to take the risk so the researchers can find cures and ways to treat the condition and improve the method of doing things.

  7. Andrea,
I am glad to hear that your mom is doing better now. I have had relatives with cancer as well and it is a struggle to see them go through that. Also it looked like you found an interesting article to go along with you research.
    Great post!
    Rachael
